New Teacher Induction Program 2006-2007

By Mary Lou Cunningham, Federation Services Officer

Over the past several years, OSSTF has been actively involved in the Board's New Teacher and Mentor Committees. These committees have now evolved into the Thames Valley New Teacher Induction Program (NTIP).

Beginning in September 2006, new teachers will be required, by legislation, to complete a New Teacher Induction Program. Our Board is required, by legislation, to offer opportunities and resources for new teachers to complete their NTIP. New contract teachers hired in the 2005-2006 year, as well as new September 2006 hires, will be able to take advantage of these opportunities by participating in the New Teacher Conferences and the Mentor Program. Occasional teachers, both short and long term may also apply to participate in the conferences.

The New Teacher Conference dates for 2006 are August 25, September 23, January 20, 2007, February 17, (new mid-year hires) and April 14. System Staff Development (452-2593) and the Board website provide further details.

OSSTF District 11 strongly supports the Board's New Teacher Conferences and the Mentor Program. and encourages new contract teachers to participate.

OSSTF also supports the Mentor Program and encourages members to volunteer to be a mentor for a new teacher. Release time will be available for mentors and new teachers for mentoring, shadowing and de-briefing. Our current mentors have found this past year's experience to be rejuvenating and invigourating. There is no required paper work nor any evaluation of another member involved. Contact your Principal if you are interested in mentoring.

Both the Board and OSSTF continue to work together to provide every opportunity for the success of our new teachers.
