Thirty-three years ago, the London
Chamber of Commerce and city high school teachers founded the Ernie McTavish Awards, in memory of a former superintendent of operations known
fondly as 'Mr. Integrity'.
The awards recognize graduating high school students, chosen by their
teachers and peers, who have overcome some obstacle or challenge in their
short lives. Some are new Canadians; others face challenges in their
personal and family lives; and some continue to work through their own
physical and emotional circumstances.
These young people are living examples of faith and hope for our
future.
Today the program is sponsored entirely by District 11, Ontario
Secondary School Teachers Federation. Each student receives a $25 gift
certificate from Chapters,
a group photograph, congratulatory letters, a copy of the script,
and a commemorative certificate.
The students were honoured at the Awards Dinner
held at Sir George Ross Secondary School on April 27, 2006.
