Club Amick Young Aboriginal Readers' Program

Introduction

Club Amick is a book club for children in Ontario's remote First Nation communities. Six times per year, club members will receive a children's book and an activities-oriented newsletter. Club members are young Native children who attend the Lieutenant Governor's Aboriginal Summer Literacy Camps and the goal is to keep the literacy light burning for them in the months following the summer. The first book and newsletter mailing is anticipated in September 2006, following the conclusion of the 2006 Lieutenant Governor's Aboriginal Literacy Summer Camps. The project will continue for a minimum of five years.

Program Objectives

bullet To promote literacy and the love of books among native children;
bullet To provide continuity for participants in the Summer Literacy Camps;
bullet To create awareness of and take steps to address the need for childhood literacy support in remote First Nation communities;
bullet To promote awareness across Ontario about the importance of childhood literacy.

Program Management

Southern Ontario Library Service (SOLS) and Ontario Library Service - North (OLS-North) will coordinate all aspects of the program, including implementing the selection and distribution of books, as well as the production of a child-friendly newsletter. SOLS and OLS-North are Transfer Payment agencies of the Ontario Ministry of Culture. They provide a wide range of support services to public libraries throughout Ontario.

Program Costs

Club Amick participants, initially, will be 1,500 children, five to 10 years-old, who will be attending the 2006 Summer Literacy Camps. The number of participants will increase during the life of the program. The total cost is about $100.00 per year, per child.

District 11 Challenge from Wendy Anes Hirschegger, District President

As you know, the provincial office has made a donation to the Lieutenant Governor's Aboriginal Summer Literacy Camps, as well as to Club Amick.

I challenge each District 11 bargaining unit and branch to hold fund-raising drives to raise additional funds for the Club Amick Young Readers' Program. For Members making donations online or by cheque to obtain a charitable tax receipt, it would be appreciated if you would let your Branch/Bargaining Unit President know how much you contributed so that we can tally a district-wide total, and provide the donation to Club Amick by mid-June.
