Depth of Focus
The cell phone on the left was scanned in by the Canon CanoScan FB620P which
uses the new CIS technology for lighting & scanning (please ignore the fact
that I haven't cleaned up the background). Notice how anything that didn't directly
touch the scan glass is out of focus which means that this new technology doesn't
have the depth of focus that the older technology has, which uses a cold cathode
tube for lighting & a CCD array with a lens/mirror for pickup. With the
Canon, when a photograph is touching the scan glass it is sharper than the UMAX,
but if the photo lifts off the glass, or you try to scan the face of a object
like this phone, the older technology that the UMAX uses will do a better job.
The cell phone on the right was scanned by the UMAX 1220P.
