Pompeii and Vesuvius

We were warned about Pompeii, but we were not prepared for it.  You have to see it to believe it.  We pictured a few acres, perhaps, but were shocked to find a city of over four square kilometres, home to 25,000 people, and it was only a small port in the Roman Empire.  Our two hours in this remarkable open air museum was far too short a time.  The town lies in the shadow of Mt. Vesuvius, the eruption of which, in 79 A.D., signalled the end for Pompeii.
