Preserved by 40 feet of ash, deposited by the 79 A.D. eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, Pompeii has been an ongoing archeological work for over two centuries.  To date, roughly half of the city has been excavated.  Other communities in the shadow of the mountain, such as Herculanium, have been much harder to unearth, having been covered instead by lava.
