Each day at the OSSTF District 11 office, we
receive questions revolving around collective agreements. Here is a question
that is often asked by Teacher members: Question: I am a contract teacher. What kind of absences will be deducted from my sick days? Answer: As most contract teachers know, each full-time teacher receives 20 paid “sick leave credits” each school year. These are credited to you at the start of the year and are pro-rated for anyone on a partial schedule. You may accumulate up to 220 days and can be used for the following: 1. Personal illness, personal injury, clinical tests, hospitalization for medical observation or treatment, emergency dental appointments, or other absences certified by a physician or dental surgeon. 2. Up to 5 days per year (of the 20 days granted) may be granted for the Teacher to care for a child, parent, or spouse. This includes paternity leave and adoption. 3. A Teacher who is unavoidably absent due to a local act of nature over which no one has control may be granted up to 3 days leave per year with deduction of sick leave credits. (Note: If the situation exists, the number of days can possibly be extended. Give us a call at District Office to discuss your situation.) Other necessary absences, such as Jury Duty and Bereavement, are considered to be leaves of absence with full salary and are not deducted from your accumulated sick leave. I hope that this information is helpful, and as always, do not hesitate to contact myself, David Russell, or any other member of the District Office staff. |
