October 5: World Teachers' Day

Provincial Office Communication

Wednesday, we celebrate your efforts and successes as teachers and educational workers in Ontario’s schools. It is because of your work and dedication that our students receive a quality education.

World Teachers’ Day, which is sponsored by Education International (EI) and UNESCO, is celebrated in over 100 countries around the world. The theme of this year’s day is “Quality Teachers for Quality Education” with a sub theme: Training for a Stronger Teaching Force! According to UNESCO/EI “across the world, millions of teachers need both a sound basic training supported by in-service education, so that they have a theoretical and practical understanding of the methodologies and practices that underpin their profession.” There is an increasing trend for some governments to use poorly trained teachers. This fundamentally undermines the quality of education.

Rhonda Kimberley-Young, OSSTF President, in reference to World Teachers’ Day, outlined the need to pause and reflect on World Teachers’ Day. “In Ontario, in Canada and across the world, teachers and education workers need to be valued by their governments. Economic, social and environmental progress and development is highly dependent on quality education systems, and high quality systems are built on teachers and education workers who are trained for important and rewarding work and retained by governments who offer the respect that frontline workers deserve.”

OSSTF is asking each member to recognize World Teachers’ Day in a tangible way this year by signing a petition to the Ontario government to deliver on its promise to give us a real College of Teachers. We have heard this promise repeatedly for more than two years, and we are tired of waiting.
