October 17: World March of Women

Provincial Office Communication

The World March of Women began on March 8, 2000. Its purpose was to highlight the poverty and violence experienced by women around the globe and to put pressure on governments to take action. The international network built in 2000 has continued to grow and is now supported by approximately 6000 women groups in 163 countries and territories. In Canada, its work has also been endorsed by OSSTF, along with many other unions and labour organizations including the Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL) and the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC).

Since March 8, 2005 the World March of Women has organized a World Relay circling the globe and carrying the Women’s Global Charter for Humanity through 50 countries. The Charter’s vision is based on five values: equality, freedom, solidarity, justice and peace. On May 1 , 2005 the Charter arrived in Vancouver and over the next six days moved on to Yellowknife, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Moncton and Quebec City before leaving for Turkey. In Quebec City, over 15 000 people met the Charter and one-by-one handed it up the streets to the legislature.

The World Relay ends on October 17 in Burkina Faso and the World March of Women has called on women to join in 24 hours of feminist solidarity and action through a series of events organized around the world at noon local time.

For additional material – including a four page pamphlet on the World Relay and the October 17 solidarity actions, check the World March of Women website.
