The Hated "PLP" is Finally Gone!

By Wendy Anes Hirschegger, District President

Bill 82, the Professional Learning Program Cancellation Act, had third reading on December 14, 2004, was passed on December 15, 2004 (with Liberal and NDP MPPs voting for the Bill and tory MPPs voting against), and received Royal Assent on December 16, 2004.

This means it is finally official: the despised PLP is gone.

This victory is a tribute to the solidarity of OSSTF members whose massive, silent non-compliance with this reprehensible tory law was a powerful force and very much a contributing factor in getting it eliminated.

Thank you for your support in this initiative!

That said, the Liberal government has yet  to reconstitute the Ontario College of Teachers so that it has a majority of classroom teachers as its Governing Council and it has not yet indicated what changes it will make to professional development and Teacher Performance Appraisal process, and so OSSTF will continue to monitor the government in these areas and others concerning education.
