Upcoming Human Rights / Status of Women Initiatives

By Bryan Smith, Human Rights / Status of Women Committee Chairperson

Take more action against violence directed at Women

December 6 is an opportunity to take more action. Although many branches are the scene of remembrance of the slaughter at L'Ecole polytechnique, for many the names, faces and hopes of the 14 victims are elusive or lost to memory, while the mass murderer of Montreal is well known. Worse, there are those who deny that the event occurred or who say that even though it didn't happen, every action was justified. In light of this horrible possibility that some will deny our right to remember the women of l'Ecole Polytechnique, Human Rights and Status of Women representatives have been given sets of easy-to-manage activities suitable for a class, a club, a students' council or other group. Additionally, there are many occasions to focus on the need to eliminate hate directed at women or any others; these are in every curriculum.

"Take More Action" on Human Rights

If the names Craig and Marc Kielburger don't ring a bell for you, it's enough to know that these young activists against child slave labour have produced two guides to active citizenship. The second of these, filled with organizational strategies, motivational stories practical tips, Take More Action, can help you, colleagues and students who you mentor to channel energies into worthy causes and results. Last year, a copy of Take Action, volume one, was given to each branch; this year you will find more ie: Take More Action, brought to your site by your Human Rights and Status of Women representative or Branch president. Not sure who is attending the Action Resource Launch Parties from your branch? Not sure who is collecting all the resources appearing at each meeting? See your branch president or join us for an upcoming meeting...the next one will be held on Tuesday November 16.

Fast Starts, More Action on AIDS and GLTB issues

District 11 Human Rights and Status of Women will be fast off the mark with resources about HIV AIDS in Africa, about GLTB students and their search for equitable treatment. Look for the announcements of Action Resource Launch Parties electronically and by fax in the Winter and Spring.
