OTF News Release

(Reprinted from OTF Website.)

The Ontario Teachers’ Federation (OTF) is pleased to announce the launch of the Ontario Teachers’ Insurance Plan (OTIP) Teaching Awards and call for nominations.

“For nine years, OTF, in partnership with TVOntario, conducted a yearly award for teaching excellence”, said OTF President Yvan Roy. “We are very happy that OTIP has agreed to sponsor the award this year.”

“OTIP is excited to participate in this project and we thank OTF for taking the initiative to establish the OTIP Teaching Awards,” added the CEO of OTIP, François Tisi. “OTIP understands and respects the hard work of teachers. This is a great opportunity to celebrate the excellence of our teachers in our publicly funded Ontario schools. We hope to promote the teaching profession and to provide an effective means of sharing best practices.”

The nominations are open to anyone who would like to nominate an excellent teacher in Ontario’s publicly funded schools. The deadline for nominations is April 30, 2004, with the announcement of the honorees to be in June 2004.

“We are also excited,” Roy continued, “by the fact that the entire nomination process will be online. Another innovation this year is a special category for a beginning teacher to be given to someone in their first five years of practice in the profession.”

The website is now open to receive nominations at www.teachingawards.ca.

OTIP is a non-profit organization serving education employees and their families with reliable, affordable insurance and financial solutions.

The Ontario Teachers’ Federation represents 144,000 full-time, part-time and occasional teachers in the publicly funded public, Catholic and francophone schools in Ontario.

Criteria

Deadline for nomination submissions is April 30, 2004.

The awards recognize teachers who:

bullet
use innovative teaching methods, design creative programs, and develop exciting learning experiences for Ontario students;

bullet
reflect the multi-ethnic heritage of Ontario society;

bullet
encourage the creative use of technology in the classroom.

Nominated teachers will demonstrate the skills and characteristics indicated within those criteria. In addition, the individual prize for a beginning teacher will consider:

willingness to learn, and develop, as well as, to seek advice from colleagues and act upon it.
