Recent
communications from Colombia tell us that the threats, kidnappings,
"disappearances", and gun shots directed at union members,
organizers and their families have not ceased. In fact, they have
increased.
The Human Rights committee of District 11 supported the efforts of a group in Woodstock to bring a Colombian family to safety, as described in an article in an earlier issue of Education Matters Online. Though this family is now well and thriving in Canada, they have not forgotten family, friends and fellow-workers in Central and South America. Nor should we! Members looking for additional information of Sweatshop labour conditions for workers in the southern hemisphere can find a copy of Common Threads at each branch. More news will also be available through the Human Rights and Status of Women committee representatives.
