The Good Life on Manitoulin IslandBy David Hall, Retired |
Helen and I had already been working on plans for a retirement home on Manitoulin Island and we decided to include a "bed and breakfast" as part of the design. The B&B would keep us out of trouble for at least part of the year and provide a little extra income on the side. Our retirement home would be my last "big" project and then we could settle into the good life.
The excavation was started on September 5, 2002 with myself as the general contractor. What a difference between working for yourself on house construction verses going back to school in September! After a couple of months off during the winter the house was completed with only a few minor glitches. Almost all the trades did a wonderful job and we are very pleased with the final outcome.
This is an open invitation to all TVDSB employees who might be interested in visiting Manitoulin Island. The trip across from Tobermory on the ferry and the drive back south via Sudbury and Muskoka makes a nice weekend getaway. In July and August, a stay on the less-busy weekdays is the way to go. We expect to be open for business sometime in June and anyone who is interested in a getaway to Manitoulin can give us a call or send an e-mail. Check our website for more details.
Oh, by the way, about the last "big" project - I was just offered a job with the native educational institute here on the island. It's a one year contract to design and set up a central resource centre for the native education system. Looks like another "big" project has materialized. This will be an interesting challenge so retirement and the good life will have to wait a bit longer.
