December 6th Day of Remembrance

Submitted by Colleen Canon, Federation Services Officer

Our District 11 OSSTF Human Rights and Status of Women Committee was overwhelmed by the response to the December 6th National Day of Remembrance & Action on Violence Against Women Poster Contest .The committee received seventy entries, from across Thames Valley, of outstanding caliber.

The judging took place on December 6th at our District Office, and we are pleased to announce six winners. In the category of Digital Illustration, first place goes to Curtis Justrabo, a student of Vicky Horley at Clarke Road S.S. Second place is awarded to Caitlin Walton and third place goes to Josh Speedie, both students of Virginia Elliot of Lucas S.S. In the category of Hand Rendered Illustration, first place goes to Kyle Dafoe and second place goes to Stephen Good, both students of Vicki Miles of Banting S.S. Third place was awarded to Chantal Camer, a student of Angela Found of Strathroy D.C.I. Numerous others received an honourable mention. (See photos above.)

Certificates of participation will be forthcoming and presentations will be made at our next Resource Launch Party on Valentine’s Day at our District Office. All six winning entries will be printed and distributed throughout the Valley for December 6th, 2006.

The committee wishes to thank all art teachers and artists who participated for making this commemorative event so successful and so meaningful to our students, many of whom were not yet born when fourteen young women were tragically killed at the Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal on December 6th, 1989.

Our thanks is also extended to all OSSTF members who worked with student clubs and classes to launch the White Ribbon campaign. All monies raised from the sale of White Ribbons will be donated to women’s shelters across our district.

Poignant displays and announcements highlighted this event, and provided our students and staffs with the opportunity to reflect on the phenomenon of violence against women in our society and to mourn the loss of lives cut short by violent acts. Sadly, in the past sixteen years, so many others women and girls have fallen victim to violence, and on the day of remembrance we paid tribute to them as well. Many names resonate, like Aseygil Candir, the beloved Peel ESL teacher who was killed at her secondary school by her estranged husband. Only weeks ago, Laurie Dupont, a Windsor nurse and single mother, was murdered in the hospital ER where she worked daily to save lives.

Two days after the National Day of Remembrance, we marked another sad anniversary. It was twenty five years since the tragic death of John Lennon, and tributes took place around the globe. John Lennon left this world with a message about peace and love, and implored us to “Imagine”. Perhaps this holiday season, we should try to imagine a world where such senseless acts of violence have been eliminated, and women in our society live free of threat or fear.
