OSSTF DISTRICT 11, THAMES VALLEY
Termination of LTD Plan Membership upon Retirement
Rationale: The long term disability plan (LTD) contract and the collective agreement require mandatory membership in the plan until retirement.
The LTD contract will allow members of the plan to apply for exemption from the provisions of the LTD plan, for a maximum period equivalent to the length of the waiting period, immediately prior to their retirement date.
Process:
· Members must apply for exemption from the plan and payroll deduction on an approved form.
· Acceptable reasons for exemption from the LTD plan are retirement from teaching at a specific date, or the member satisfies the unreduced pension termination criteria for termination of benefits under the plan.
· An application for exemption, due to retirement, must be accompanied by a letter to the Thames Valley District School Board, detailing intent to retire and the date of the retirement and should be faxed to Eric Wilson, OTIP service representative at 1-905-331-9583.
· OTIP will direct the board to exempt the applicant from further LTD deductions for a maximum period equivalent to the length of the LTD plan waiting period, or such balance of the waiting period which remains prior to the member’s retirement. Retroactive exemptions from LTD deductions are not permitted.
· Applicants must ensure that their completed application is forwarded to OTIP one month prior to the effective date of the exemption to allow time for implementation.
