World Teachers' Day: Teachers' Wall of Fame

By Mary Lou Cunningham, Federation Services Officer

Dr. Madeline Hardy, Mr. Pat Dunne, Dr. Rebecca Coulter

In recognition of World Teachers’ Day, 2004, the Faculty of Education at The University of Western Ontario, in partnership with the London Public Library, has taken the initiative to establish in our community a Teachers’ Wall of Fame. Designed to recognize the work of end-of career or retired teachers in London and area, the Teachers’ Wall of Fame will be housed on a wall on the second floor of the London Public Library and will be a permanent reminder of the dedication and commitment of all teachers to education and the well-being of our society.

The unveiling of the Teachers’ Wall of Fame occurred on Tuesday, October 5, 2004 with Dr. Rebecca Coulter, Faculty of Education, Dr. Allen Pearson, Dean, Faculty of Education, Mr. Darrel Skidmore, CEO, London Public Library, Dr. Madeline Hardy, former Director of the former London Board of Education, Mr. Pat Dunne, former Director of the London District Catholic School Board and representatives from ETFO, OSSTF and the Thames Valley Board of Education in attendance.

Annually, educators and the public will gather as photos and biographies of two local teachers will be put on the wall each October 5, World Teachers’ Day, with the first two going up next year. Call for nominations will be widely circulated in London and area, with nominations going to a selection committee. The Teachers’ Wall of Fame will recognize exemplary end-of-career teachers in London and area for their contributions to teaching and the community.

“Teachers are taken for granted. Teachers also tend to be modest about their accomplishments,” said Dr. Coulter, who hopes this wall will raise the profile of World Teachers’ Day.

“It’s easy to overlook them but teachers are central to everything. Everybody has one or two they thought were great. Teaching has always been a hard job and it has become harder as teachers have to deal with more complex problems. This wall will show the respect we ought to have for generations of teachers, and as Londoners we should celebrate,” announced Dr. Coulter.

What a wonderful way to keep education in the public eye!
