The following is the text of the speech given
by Linda Huber, Vice-President of the Continuing Education Instructors'
Bargaining Unit. Linda, who teaches Literacy and Basic Skills to adult
students at the G.A. Wheable Adult Education Centre, presented Brian
Travis with an Adult Learner Award sponsored by the
London Council for Adult
Education on May 6, 2004.
"It has been my great privilege and honour to have been Brian
Travis’ teacher over the years. I am just going to give you a quick snapshot
of his life as my student. Brian first started with our program back in 1994
as a night school student studying literacy. He tells me that he was
referred to us by a friend and to all intents and purposes he was
illiterate. At that time, Brian was working full time in London (sometimes
shifts of up to 10 or more hours) but he still made time for that twice a
week trip to Wheable! At first, his main goal was to be more independent but
as time passed, he developed the goal of achieving his high school diploma.
When he first started with our program, he has been out of school for over
14 years so you can realize that this was a big step for him. Time passed;
Brian’s reading and writing skills greatly improved and when circumstances
at work changed; I encouraged him to take a correspondence course to
maintain the level he had achieved.
Brian came back to school January 2003 full time after his company announced
they would be closing down last summer, putting him out of work after 24
years. He decided to upgrade Math and again ended up in my class as well as
taking a Technology credit course. During the last year he has completed
several credit courses along with completing Math upgrading and is well on
his way to achieving his goal. I asked Brian how he would rate his overall
experience in adult education: challenging, rewarding and sometimes
frustrating and I believe those words would sum up the feelings of many of
our learners.
In Brian’s own words, he has found his family, the teachers, and other
students to be extremely supportive; modesty however prevents him from
stating that, as a student, he has taken other younger newer students under
his wing and provided an extremely positive role model for them. He wouldn’t
say that, but I can!!!
His goal now after completion of his diploma is to go to Fanshawe College to
further upgrade his education.
I am so proud of you Brian; congratulations once again and best wishes in
the future." |
