The Ontario College of Teachers Governing Council has approved a balanced budget for 2004. The annual fee has been maintained at $139.00. For most Teachers’ Bargaining Unit members, this will be deducted from the second pay in January, 2004. However, teachers who are on leave and don’t get paid in January, Occasional Teachers, Continuing Education Teachers and Continuing Education Instructors do not have it deducted automatically, and will be invoiced by the OCT directly for the fees. Members who forget to pay their fees will be suspended for non-payment of fees; to be reinstated will cost the $139 plus a reinstatement fee, as well as a lot of aggravation. In the past, some members have even lost income while reinstatement is being sorted out because, if not in good standing, one is considered "unqualified". All teachers holding Interim Certificates of Qualifications (ICQ) issued after March 15, 2002 face a deadline for the Ontario Teacher Qualifying Test. The next test is April 3, 2003 but ICQ holders must register before Feb. 24, 2004. A subsequent test is July 10, 2004 with a registration deadline of June 1, 2004. Retirees are reminded that if they are not renewing their College membership, in order to avoid being listed on Public Register as "suspended, non-payment of fees" they should forward a Notice of Retirement form to the OCT. That form is available at http://www.oct.ca. |
