Westminster teacher Laurie Bunch was presented with a "City of London Bravery Award" certificate by London Mayor DeCocco at a City of London Council Meeting at City Hall on February 3, 2003. Here is the text of the Mayor's address at this award ceremony: On April 30, 2002, a male, who was not a student, entered Westminster Secondary School. In his possession was a wooden kali stick, a martial arts weapon, hidden in the sleeve of his shirt. While in the school, he stole a guitar and left the building. Approximately two hours later, the man returned to the school and walked through the hallways. He checked several of the doors to the classrooms and walked to the library. At this time, a custodian was exiting the library. The man approached the custodian from behind and struck him on the wrist with the weapon. This strike broke the custodian’s wrist. Mr. Laurie Bunch, a teacher at the school heard the assault. Mr. Bunch came to the aid of the custodian and kicked the accused. The accused then chased Mr. Bunch and attempted to hit him with the weapon. Mr. Bunch was able to stay out of the reach of the assailant and locked himself in a classroom. The accused then fled the school. It is apparent that the quick actions of Mr. Bunch, while disregarding his own personal safety, saved the custodian from more extensive injury. Congratulations, Laurie, District 11 OSSTF is proud of you!Laurie ; information for this article was paraphrased from that nomination and also provided by Melissa herself. |
