This was taken in late April, just as the sea ice was starting to move around.  By late May, this crack would be about 8 feet of open water.  To travel anywhere by sea ice, you need to be willing to jump across these cracks.  Speed is your friend.  They're not for the feint of heart.  (Click on the photo for a higher resolution view.)
