IWhile planning for the Labrador trip it became quite obvous that space was going to be an issue so I decided to get to work on a roof rack for all the gear we needed for the trip.  The key here was light weight, strength and cost so I headed to the local Home Depot to see what might work.  I found some 1" conduit that is use for running electrical wiring and felt that this would work because it was A) light, B) relativley inexpensive and C) can be bent easily or you can by pre bent sections at 45 and 90 degrees.  I then went to the steel yard and purchase some 3/4 square tube for the base.  I stick built this unit piece by piece on the garage floor over a couple of weeks.  I also opted to include a mount for my new High lift jack to allow more room inside the truck.  The only thing to remember is that you have to grind the galvanizing off of the conduit or it will not weld properly.  The finished rack is about 75lbs and although it takes 2 to get it on the roof, I can easily pick it up myself on the ground.  Its strong and made
