It started out simple enough... I kept wacking my running boards when I was on the
trails! Running boards?? you may ask. Yes running boards. My
first 4 Runner was originaly purchased for my rather short, but very lovely and
long suffering wife. Not long after I drove it for the first time I was
hooked and soon she was driving my car and I had the truck! The running
boards, although great for my wife, were cramping my style so one weekend while
she was getting groceries (in the car of course) the boards went in thedumpster!
Now the problem was that I was trying harder and harder obstacles to
test the limits of my new foundclearance and I soon realized that those funky bars
that I kept seeing on people trail rigs were there for a reason. I sat
down at the computer and surfed for a while until I saw Scott Wilson's bars on
Off-road.com and I knew I had found what I was looking for! These bars bolted on (easy to
remove if wife gets bugged or I redesign them) and were a simple design that
I felt confident that I could copy. I threw some ideas on paper and started
cutting! The bars themselves are made of 2 x 2 1/4" wall tube and the
out riggers (as I like to call them) are 2x2 3/16" wall tube. The mounting
pads were cut from a piece of 1/4" steel plate and drilled to accept 1/2" bolts.
Like Scott, I mitred the last 8-10" of each nerf with a "kick out" to
help protect the sheet metal in front of the rear wheels and a wedge shape on
the front to help get up on the really big rocks.. the only real glitch I
ran into wasthe fact that I hadnt noticed that the frame rails narrow near the
front of the truck so the front "out rigger" needed to be longer and the mounting
pad slightly angled (thank goodness for grinders). To get the correct angle
and length I clamped the nerf in place on the frame with the center and rear mounts
so I could take measurements and cut the correct angles. Once I had welded the mounting pad to the end of the out rigger I test fit it in behind the clamped on nerf (yes it fit the first time) and I tacked it in place. I then removed the unit from the truck to finish the welding, Although the nerfs are finished they still aren't on the truck because winter came before I could finish up. As soon as the weather changes I will mount them and take some photos |
Original concept borrowed from Scott Wilson... Thanks Scott!! |
