Beloved Friends in Christ,

"Does she or doesn't she?" That was the question posed in a hair colour commercial by Clairol some years ago. Today, however, the question may be this: "Is it or isn't it?… a planet?"-Pluto, that is.

According to a recent gathering of scientists, there are only eight planets in our solar system, and Pluto is not one of them. Although Pluto was considered a planet for 75 years, it now is part of a new category of celestial bodies called dwarf planets.

Well. I guess that's the way it goes in the scientific community. What's right one day is wrong the next. So much for the ability of science to provide us with absolute truth. The fact of the matter is that if you are looking for solid, lasting truth, it will never be found in science.

God's Word, on the other hand, offers a truth that is unchanging. And the reason that it is unchanging is that the truth that God's Word offers is the truth of truth's Creator Himself. Yes, the very One who made the planets and the dwarf planets, and who understands what they are and how they work, even as He understands the truth about all things-for He made everything-will never change His mind about what is true as if He never understood it properly in the first place. The truth of God's Word is eternal.

And what a wonderful thing that is! For God's Word tells us not only of the planets and other scientific considerations. The wisdom of His Word extends also into matters of eternal importance for every human being. It is in God's Word alone that we find the truth about eternal life, namely that through faith in Jesus Christ, we are reconciled unto God for eternity.

This truth will never change. We will never have to wonder: "Does God or doesn't God?… mean what He says in His Word?" What God has declared through His eternal Word stands firm in the heavens.
