A New Highway
"Set up road signs; put up guideposts.
Take note of the highway, the road that you take."
(Jeremiah 31:21)
Beloved Friends in Christ,
For anyone who travels between Elmira and Kitchener, Thursday was a big day. After weeks of inconvenience, the main highway connecting the two towns was opened again. No more barriers, road closure signs or detours!
Instead, we have a new roundabout-the busiest in the Region of Waterloo-along the way. Signs and road markings abound near the roundabout to help make navigating the intersection less confusing. But many people, myself included, believe that the roundabout will likely confuse some and possibly prove to be dangerous.
There is another highway, however, that is even more busy and confusing, and therefore even more dangerous, namely the highway of life. It is of this highway that Jeremiah, in the verse above, speaks when he writes, "Set up road signs; put up guideposts. Take note of the highway, the road that you take". Even as a poorly marked highway intersection can be dangerous, so when life's highway is poorly marked, it can be dangerous.
Jesus says of this highway, "Broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But…narrow [is] the road that leads to life, and only a few find it." He too is concerned that we take note of the road we travel. In fact, knowing that we do not travel the highway well, He came among us to travel the road with us, mark it for us and guide us over it.
Jesus travelled the road with us. He lived as we live-among us in a sin stained world. Only, He did not sin. Then, Jesus took His sinless life-His very life-blood-and shed it for us, marking the highway clearly with it. Looking to-trusting-this blood of Jesus, we find ourselves on the right road. Through faith in Jesus, we are on the road to a life of eternal bliss. And this road is not an uncertain, confusing or dangerous road. For, Christ Jesus our Lord has further marked the road with many easy to read guideposts and signs. He has left clear directions for us, so that we might cheerfully live our daily lives in obedience to His holy will.
For all this, we thank Him. Yes, we rejoice in Him who for us "set up road signs; put up guideposts and took note of the highway". In Christ, the detours are gone and the intersections are safe.
In His service,
Pastor Richard A. Frey
