Orchestra London staves off bankruptcy

THE ARTS REPORT - CBC Radio

LONDON, Ont. - Orchestra London has reached its fund-raising goal of $330,000.

The orchestra had to meet its goal by May 31st or face bankruptcy. It also had to put together a three-year business plan that balances artistic excellence with fiscal responsibility.

Part of its plan for next year's season includes performing in the round with the audience in comfortable chairs or couches while being served hors d'oeuvres by candlelight. The money was raised mostly from the local community starting with the musicians themselves. They donated their paycheques.

Once the orchestra's operating expenses are met it plans to continue accepting donations. That money will be used to establish an endowment fund that may help to avoid another financial crunch in the future.
