LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Greatness includes support for the arts

I read with interest the bit about our new man in town, London Free Press publisher Les Pyette, and his Onward and Upward promotional section, to appear in The Free Press March 31 (Free Press looks to city's future, Feb. 19).

He speaks glowingly of a city that "verges on greatness." In case you're confused, he refers to London, Ont. He speaks of London's success and potential.

This is the town where the fumblistic group known as city council is about to blow the farm on a new hockey arena to the tune of about $40 million -- but seems to feel unmoved to aid in any small way the Grand Theatre or Orchestra London, both in financial difficulty.

These two organizations have served the city well for many, many years. Now, for the lack of a few bucks from the city, most likely they will be no more.

The amount required to put them in reasonable operational shape is piddling compared to the amount of borrowed money about to be blown on the proposed hockey arena.

Need I point out London's abysmal record of support for various sporting adventures over the years?
