Canadian Musicians Employment Status Archive LONDON FREE PRESS Wednesday March 8, 2000 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Will young musicians have a chance to play?
Anyone doubting the need for a professional orchestra in London obviously was not at Alumni Hall Feb. 23 for the annual Variety Is concert, which featured more than 1,600 music students from high schools throughout the Thames Valley District school board. I participated in this event. It was great to perform alongside so many exceptional ensembles made up of students my own age and younger. In the audience, my mother heard the comment, "There's so much talent here, and we're (London is) struggling to keep our orchestra. Where are these kids going to play?" Though every performer in Variety Is will not necessarily become a professional musician, this concert certainly demonstrated there is a group of well-rounded young people who will at least grow up appreciating well-written and well-performed music and will certainly appreciate any effort made by the city to keep Orchestra London operating.
