1. Classic skis should glide in front and behind the "grip zone". Therefore, they need a wax that glides on pretty much any snow. That wax needs to be carefully ironed on the base. Ski stores will do this once a season for ~$30.
2. When you put your weight down on classic skis the grip zone should stick to the snow and allow you to kick off. Therefore, waxes for the grip zone need to be adjusted according to the temperature and moisture of the snow. Rub the grip wax like a big crayon onto the grip zone (from your heel to approx. 40cm forward) and buff in with a cork. Apply 2-3 thin layers.
3. For an easy glide wax use Toko Express Wax rub-on glide wax. Classic skiers can simply wipe this paste onto the tips and tails and buff. Skate skis glide the whole length so they do not get any grip wax.
4. If you need to put on new grip wax: Scrape any old wax off the ski base as thoroughly as possible with a plastic or metal scraper. Clean the base a couple of times with wax remover (citrus-based) and a clean rag.
