Shipping Made Easy
Here is all the information you need to ship an appliance to us, or what to expect when we ship
an appliance to you. Some people think shipping to or from Canada is going to entail a lot of
bother or expense. Nothing is further from the truth!
Shipping to Phil's Appliance Science
Shipping via UPS Canada Standard Service or FedEx is fast, safe and inexpensive if done correctly.
You will be required to fill out a customs declaration form and a waybill. These 2 documents outline
where the package is from, where it's going to, what's inside and what's the value. If the mixer is being
shipped to us for service, put "return for service" in the appropriate box. This will ensure that we are not
charged any brokerage fees or duties. As with anything of value, insurance is recommended and the
amount you choose to place on your item depends on it's value to you.
While shipping using the Postal Service is not as secure, this may be a prefered method for
you if certain precautions are taken. If the appliance is securely packed using the methods
outlined below, you will go along way to ensuring your item has a safe trip. Your local
Postal Counter can help with the customs slip. The rules for customs information is the same
as with the couriers so make sure the above steps are followed.
The secret to a smooth trip over the boarder is clear, complete, detailed information.
Shipping to You
We use UPS Standard Service for all shipments. Our corporate account ensures that you are
quoted a low shipping fee. Once your appliance ships, we will immediately email you with the
tracking number. For overseas shipments we use Canada Post. All shipments are ensured for
their full value.
Packing Instructions
Following these few simple rules are essential to avoid breakage. The vast majority of damaged shipments we receive are due to poor packaging and NOT mishandling by the shipping company.
All mixers must be disassembled before packaging. If the motor comes off the stand, remove it. Beaters must be removed as well.
TIP : Mixer stands are awkward to wrap and pack. Often they are attached by a few screws or a nut. Remove them! You will now have two easily handled items instead of one cumbersome piece. Place the screws back in there holes to prevent loss during shipping.
Wrap each part individually in at least 3 layers of bubblewrap or foam padding. Newspaper alone is not adequate and should only be used to take up extra space in the package. If the motor or any part that can be easily broken can be placed in it's own small box after being wrapped, all the better. That's how we do it!
Choose a box that is the right size for your shipment. A box that is too big is as bad as one that is too small. A good rule-of-thumb is; when everything is ready to go in the box, make sure there is about two inches of space between your items and the outside of the box, including the top and bottom. This space must be taken up with adequate packing material. Also, ensure that two inches of space exists between the items in the box. Parts that come in contact during shipping are bound to get broken!
Make sure your box is up to the task. Boxes come in different grades. Some are sturdier than others. If a box feels flimsy, don't use it. A box that has been used repeatedly will have lost some of it's integrity. Never use a box that is torn, has crumpled corners or has creases in it.
Mixers and appliances with handles should be positioned so that their handles are not on the outside of the box. I've received mixers with broken handles because they were placed at the top of the box. While the box did not appear to have been hit, pressure from heavy boxes or being stacked could have caused this damage.
Foam peanuts or popcorn are good packing materials and will help to immobilize an item as long as your box is completely filled. Leave no empty space in the package. If you use newspaper to fill in empty corners, pack it down tightly, filling the space completely. Nothing should be able to shift or move. Movement and shifting are by far the greatest cause of breakage.
IMPORTANT: When you ship your mixer to us for restoration or an overhaul please DO NOT!!! include the beaters, attachments or any glassware! They are not required.
