What?

The Lighthouse of Icons is part of the Studite Fathers' complex which includes the Holy Dormition monastery.  The Studite Fathers in Woodstock, Ontario, who have coordinated the project, are members of one of the oldest monastic orders of the Church dating from pre-schism times.  The spacious ten-story multi-purpose religious structure and museum in the shape of a lighthouse houses 88 icons plus valuable maps and displays.

The structure of the Lighthouse is octagonal, recalling St. Peter's home beside the Sea of Galilee and reaching some 40 meters high.  It's solid steel and concrete structure has a large entry vestibule, elevator and sets of stairs, but the main feature is an ascending helical gallery providing display space for the icons and topped by an observation deck.  It is one of the highest buildings in Woodstock, with a panoramic view of the city.

Why?

Why a Lighthouse?  Lighthouses are more than just navigational markers that shine lights into the sky to aid seafarers in confirming their bearings or navigating rocky and treacherous lanes.  They blink their candescent message, a beam of safety, familiarity and refuge shepherding men to the security of home and family.  Scripture tells us that God is the light of the world and His work is a beacon for us.  The Lighthouse of Icons symbolizes this theme while evoking peace and adventure.

The Lighthouse will be open for public tours and, pilgrimage and study groups interested in the Byzantine Icon tradition and spirituality. There will also be a fine collection of historical maps and documents relating to the history and geography of Eastern Europe, Canadian and monastic history.
