Camp BEL

Camp BEL has been named after the late Bert Eldon Langford.

The camp has approximately 30 acres of clear camping and activity area as well as 30 acres of wooded grounds. It backs up to the Thames River that is suitable for some canoeing activities in the early summer months.

Camp Bel is host to the annual Dorchester International Brotherhood Camporee (DIBC) the largest annual scout camp held in North America with approx. 3600 participants and 100+ events and displays. In the spring of 1996, we were host to the Venturer International Camporee. In addition, we have hosted both the 1st and 2nd Biannual regional week-long camps in 1994 and 1996. Over these years several permanent facilities have been brought together:

• Donated school portables to provide a meeting sleeping areas
• Township water has been setup at the camp at different locations
• A pavillion has been built by a local service group
• Several high adventure events such as:
  • Two rappelling towers: One with 2 faces and one with 6 faces (2 free fall)
  • Four bosun chair stations, 2 that run over the Thames River
  • A high wire walk event with 3 walkways (approx. 25' high)
  • A 'quad' monkey bridge (has four 30' - 40' span bridges)
  • The list can go on and on....(over 150 events at DIBC)
• There are showering facilities on site (limited number - only 2 so far, will be more for camp)
• Fully serviced, restaurant cooking facilities
• A little more than 1/3 of the land (almost 1/2) is forested
• Large parking facilities across the road from the camp (the local fairgrounds)
