Dear New OSSTF Members:

Welcome to OSSTF District 11--Thames Valley. Your new position with the Thames Valley District School Board will prove to be exciting and challenging over the coming years. I would like to provide you with information regarding some of the services that may be of value to you as a new member of OSSTF District 11–Thames Valley. Click here for additional information relating to the district as a whole. OSSTF District 11 is comprised of four bargaining units--Teachers; Occasional Teachers; Continuing Education Instructors; and Professional Student Services Personnel--and you have automatically become a part of the bargaining unit in which your job is categorized. Clicking on these links will take you to information about each of those bargaining units.

Our office location and contact information can be found at the top of the page. Click here for contact information for the District Office personnel and bargaining unit Presidents; it includes their names, phone extensions and email addresses as well as links to each of the main pages for the four bargaining units.

The most important thing you need to know about being an OSSTF member is that you have a wide range of supports in place for you. As a Union member, you have the right to Union representation at any meeting concerning your conduct or competence.

The Collective Agreement is the document that governs everything to do with your salary, working conditions, benefits and a wide variety of other issues. The contract is negotiated between the Board and the specific bargaining unit of District 11, and both parties must abide by the contract. It can take a while to understand everything in the contract and how it pertains to your rights and responsibilities in terms of your job, so if you have any questions about anything to do with your job or the contract, please don’t hesitate to speak to the OSSTF Rep for your school/worksite/job class or call us here at the office.

All of the District and bargaining unit newsletters that are distributed to you at your school or worksite are also posted on our website as is our electronic magazine Education Matters Online. As new information is added to the website, there will be a link to it from our home page.

OSSTF District 11 has an extensive list of committees, both at the District level and at the Bargaining Unit level that may be of interest to you. Information about District Committees (which include Educational Services, Communications/Excellence in Education, Political Action, Health & Safety and Human Rights / Status of Women). The greater the level of representation on these committees, the more effective they will become. If, once you get settled into your job, you are interested in serving on any of these committees, contact your Bargaining Unit President or the Federation Services Officer liaison to the committee you are interested in.

At this exciting time in your life, once again “Welcome to OSSTF District 11–Thames Valley”; we wish you the best of luck in your career.

David Russell
