Many of the majors of golf were won by former Optimist Junior Golf participants. Canadian Mike Wier & Tiger Woods (Masters), Ernie Els (US Open), Justin Leonard (British Open) and David Love III (PGA Championships). The number of golfers participating in the International Optimist Championship increased from 494 in 1996 to 650 in 1997. Every state, Canadian province and 18 other nations were represented by this group of youngsters ranging in age from 10 to 18. Among the competitors were from former OIJGC and champions from other prominent junior golf tournaments.

1997 was a historic year as the final tournament was broadcast across the United States and around the world. ESPN and ESPN International both aired a one hour special program of the championships. It was also shown in Latin America, South America, Mexico and Puerto Rico at different times.

Each year the top 3 finishers in each age division are considered for an invitation to the following years Optimist International Junior Golf Championships. Held at the PGA National Resort and Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, this prestigious tournament will have juniors from over 25 countries attending.

The Oakridge Optimist Club has sponsored the Junior Golf Program at Thames Valley Golf Course in London for over 15 years and many players have progressed to the Ontario Junior Optimist and Canadian Junior Optimist Championships in the past. Several have also obtained scholarships at various Universities in the U.S.
