ESSAY CONTEST

PURPOSE

This is the fourth most popular program among Optimists with over 1,200 Clubs participating in 2002. The Essay contest is sponsored by Optimist International to give young people the opportunity to write about their own opinions regarding the world in which they live. The approach can encompass a young person’s personal experience, the experience of their country or a more historical perspective. In additional to developing skills for written expression, participants also have the opportunity win college scholarships of $6,000 for first place! Second place receives $3,750 and third, $2,250. The essay contest awards $44,000 annually in scholarships.

HOW TO ENTER

Interested students submit essays on the pre-assigned topic to their local Optimist Club. The essays are judged at the club level, district level and at the international level.

ELIGIBILITY

The contest is open to students under age 19 as of December 31st, 2006 of the current school year, and are also in the 10th to 12th grades.

LENGTH OF ESSAY

400 - 500 words

The deadline for students to submit essays is determined by the sponsoring Club. Please contact your District Chair for more information. The deadline for Clubs to submit their winning essay to the District Chair is April 15, 2007. The deadline for Districts to submit their winner's information to Optimist International is June 15, 2007.
