Message From the President
Happy New Year!
Congratulations to Optimist Kevin Heslop on his uncontested triumph by acclamation to President for 2001-02 of our club. He will be forever indebted to his campaign manager for a well-orchestrated nomination. A full outline of the new Board of Directors for next year is in this newsletter. Congratulations to one and all.
President-Elect Kevin, V.P.-Elect Craig, Secretary-Treasurer Elect Doug and I will be representing Oakridge at the District Third Quarter Board meeting in May in Brantford.
Our hockey committee is staging a Celebration at the arena on May 19th. As a club we are volunteering to provide assistance at the lunch and raffle tables. Call captains will be in touch shortly for this fun event. A flyer outlining the activities is included with the newsletter.
President-Elect Kevin is working hard again on the teen roller blading nights for May at the arena. He is still willing to take volunteers for Friday evening sessions this month.
In addition Optimist Kevin will be chef extraordinaire at the club barbeque following the police station touring for our May meeting. There will be some surprise meat and prizes.
Several Saturday golf events are set for June including the annual Carling-Heights tournament on the 9th, a district Optimist event in Mitchell on the 16th and an informal club golf game following our breakfast meeting on June 23rd. Interested members are invited to see me about any of these matches.
And finally keep Friday July 27th open as the club plans an evening Car Rally followed by a pool party. Should be lots of fun. More details to follow.

OAKOGRAPHY
Rick Harriss has been a member of the Oakridge Optimist Club since 1998. I am proud to say that I sponsored his membership. He is currently serving his second year of being a Director and has been busy helping the club in a number of ways. He is a regular at bingo and is a member of the hockey tournament planning committee.
Rick has been married to Dana for 16 years and they have three children ranging in ages from 14 to 9; Breanne, Alexendra and Daniel. The girls are very involved in the Ramblers basketball program and Danny plays hockey in our program and lacrosse in the Blue Devils which is sponsored by our club.
Rick has been a member of the London Police Service for almost 21 years and presently holds the rank of Detective Sergeant. We were partners in 1990 when we investigated child abuse cases together. He now commands the General Investigation Section and is responsible for the investigation of all break and enters, auto thefts, arsons and robberies. He also supervises the Youth Crime Unit and the Drug Free London program, which means that he will get plenty of calls from Eric Riley related to work.
Rick has a long history of volunteerism in our community. He has coached baseball and soccer in North London, he has coached lacrosse for the past three years and he has donated blood over 150 times. Dana is also very active in coaching and has other community involvement. Our in-line skating program was suggested by Dana to Kevin Heslop, who then developed and ran the program.
Rick has a couple of fond Optimist memories. He enjoys the NOW breakfasts and has used them to bring in three new members over the years. He remembers vividly the first year of the in-line skating when his daughter did not want him to be at the arena. They reached a compromise that would have Rick staying in the lobby while Breanne skated. Rick was constantly asking us what was going on in the arena. Daughters! Fathers!
Rick has been active in our community and has potential for more Optimist involvement I am sure. Is it too early to form a Rick Harriss for President committee? (By Rick Gillespie)

This was a "Reunion Meeting" when past and present members were invited to celebrate accomplishments of the club. 48 attended this very enjoyable get together.
We appreciate the efforts of Opt. Fred Fickling, who organized a slide presentation which reflected some of the Oakridge's history.
Pictured below are some of those who enjoyed the evening:
Opt Fred and Jim Wettlaufer reminiscing with the help of slides taken in past years.

Opt Vince sold 50/50 tickets.
Opt Max and Opt Doug share a good story with Don Boos.
Opt Linda and Opt. Peter enjoyed a night out together and meeting old friends.
