I excelled in both hockey and football at McMaster university in
Hamilton. In my final year as a junior, I played amateur hockey with
the Hamilton Tigers. I was also a pole-vaulter, winning the Canadian
and British Empire championship in 1934, the Canadian title again in
1935, and then finishing sixth in the 1936 Olympic Games to earn a
point for Canada.

I became the first ever Leaf winner of the ------- Trophy.

I was voted All-Star centre twice and to the second team three times
and also won the Lady Byng Trophy once.

During my hockey career, I scored 201 goals and 432 points in 423
games. I also had 25 goals and 54 points in 59 career playoff games.

I ran for public office in 1940, narrowly losing a bid for a federal
seat. I was named Ontario Athletic Commissioner in 1946 and for 11
years, 1963-74, I was a Conservative member of the provincial
parliament and served in Ontario's cabinet. |
