Classic Garden Ornaments, Ltd., designs and manufactures dry cast limestone planters and garden ornaments. We are not fountain specialists and can, at best, give only general suggestions about planters used as fountain elements. Please seek the advice of a fountain specialist for the design, installation, maintenance and winter care of any fountain. Due to local variations in climate and in building code requirements, we suggest finding a local fountain specialist. Please consult with your fountain specialist for advice regarding questions such as:
|
| |
|
|
|
size of fountain
height of water fall
diameter of pool
depth of pool
splash retention
height of pool surround
piping and plumbing
nozzle selection
desired water flow
pump selection
pump location
electric wiring
installation
sealing
winter care
maintenance

SUGGESTIONS |
| |
|
The water in a fountain, while soothing and beautiful in a garden or a courtyard, has certain potentially harmful properties that require attention when used in or around Longshadow dry cast limestone planters. |
|
|
Moving water can cause erosion.
~ A natural stone sealer is required to prevent erosion.
Agitated water can cause natural stone sealer to break down prematurely.
~ The condition of the sealer must be monitored.
Water can seep through the porous walls of Longshadow planters and cause lime-bloom.
~ Well maintained sealer is required to prevent erosion and lime-bloom.
Chemicals in local water can cause staining.
~ Pool specialists or other technical experts might be able to give advice on how to remove or control staining.
Falling water can create splash that goes outside its pool.
~ Pool surrounds should be high enough and wide enough.
Water will expand as it freezes.
~ Winter care requires attention to the effects of freezing water.
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
SEALING |
| |
|
We apply one coat of sealant to fountains. The installer must apply stone sealer following directions,
such as those that follow. We do not seal planters and garden ornaments. |
| |
MAINTENANCE |
| |
|
The fountain specialist, the designer, the installer and the owner should develop a program that includes fountain and pump
maintenance, sealer maintenance and winter care. |
| |
|
|
The maintenance program should include: |
| |
|
|
~ a regular program to reapply sealer to prevent erosion and lime-bloom
~ monitoring the condition of the sealer by checking for the appearance of
erosion on the inside and lime-bloom on the outside and underside of a fountain and
~ arranging removal of the lime-bloom and re-applying sealer. |
| |
LIME-BLOOM CAN BE REMOVED BY FOLLOWING THESE STEPS |
| |
|
|
~ drain fountain
~ gently scrape and sand off the lime-bloom
~ rinse and repeat
~ try pressure washing, if needed
~ clean inside of bowl
~ allow to dry
~ apply natural stone sealer
~ allow sealer to dry
~ apply a second coat of natural stone sealer
~ allow sealer to dry
~ fill and turn on the fountain |
| |
|
Delay will cause additional build up of lime-bloom, making it increasingly difficult to remove. |

PRODUCT: 02-51092 DESCRIPTION: Natural Look Waterproofer
FEATURES: This product forms a long lasting, waterproofing seal on concrete, brick, masonry, exposed aggregate, natural stone
and pavers. This sealer is fortified with new, heavy-duty resin technology to protect against the sun’s powerful rays, water,
gasoline and deicing salts. This protective sealer allows the natural look of the surface to come through. Do not use below grade.
SURFACE PREPARATION:
General: All surfaces must be clean, dry and free of all loose, peeling paint or contaminants. Bare Concrete: Allow 60 days
minimum for new concrete to cure before sealing. Previously Sealed Surfaces: Clean with an all-purpose cleaner (TSP or
substitute). Previously sealed surfaces must be porous and able to accept additional sealer. Test surface porosity before
sealing: Avoid using this product on non-porous, sealed surfaces. To test, place a few drops of water on surface. If water sinks
in, the surface is porous enough to use this finish. If water remains on the surface, do not use. |

Classic Garden Ornaments, Ltd., designs and manufactures high quality, dry cast limestone Longshadow planters, pedestals, finials, figures, pool surrounds, benches, birdbaths and beautiful barriers in Arts & Crafts, Prairie and Traditional styles, for exterior residential and commercial use.
Dry cast limestone has the texture, appearance and durability of carved limestone at a fraction of the cost. Dating to Roman times, dry cast limestone has a natural porosity that makes it frost-proof and enables it to withstand decades
of weathering. Dry-cast limestone is suitable for all-season exterior use for residential and commercial, street and mall site furnishings.
