Racing Career:

Began driving Karts at the age of eight. Went on to win thirteen amateur and ten pro-Kart championships.

1981 - Won professional Karting Association world title.

1982 to 83 - Raced GPX Karts.

1984 - Entered IMSA GTU ranks, making two starts.

1985 - Made eight GTU starts, placed in Top Ten in all races including six times in Top Five and scored first pro win in GTO Thunderbird at Pocono.

1986 - Won IMSA GTO championship, taking nine poles and seven victories. Eighth in Trans-Am points. Competed in two IMSA GTP events winning at Columbus.

1987 - Started nine GTP races and ten GTO events. Won SCCA Trans-Am championship with seven wins and nine poles and made first IROC appearance. Co-drove to GTO class win at Daytona 24 Hours. Trans-Am career included thirty three starts and eleven victories.

1988 - Gambled entire life savings on an IndyCar start at Long Beach. Qualified in top ten on provisional grid, wound up starting thirteenth, finishing eighteenth. Stepped in for injured Kevin Cogan at Meadowlands and Mid-Ohio. Drove Jack Roush Mercury to second IMSA GTO point title including a class win at Daytona 24 Hours. Made second IROC appearance, finishing third in points with a win at Riverside.

1989 - Named to Budweiser Truesports ride in first full IndyCar season. Finished eleventh in oval debut at Phoenix. Finished tenth at Indianapolis to win IndyCar Rookie of the Year honours. At Detroit, Pruett led the race but finished second to Emerson Fittipaldi. Five Top Five and eleven Top Ten finishes.

1990 - Spent the year on the sidelines recovering from broken ankle, heels knees and back sustained in West Palm Beach, Florida testing accident. Returned to test Jaguar IMSA GTP car in October.

1991 - Drove Jaguar in 24 Hours of Daytona in February. Competed in third IROC, winning at Daytona, finishing fourth overall. Awarded STP Most Improved Driver - selected by his IndyCar peers. Had five Top Five and seven Top Ten finishes, ranked tenth overall in series points.

1992 - Posted ten Top Ten qualifying efforts and ten Top Ten finishes. Best was fourth at Vancouver, best qualifying was third at Long Beach. Co-drove to second place finish in 24 Hours of Daytona in Jaguar XJR-12D.

1993 - Made six starts with new Pro Formance team. Scored back-to-back seventh place finish at Phoenix and Long Beach. Made announcement at Laguna Seca that he would join Patrick Racing to develop Firestone's IndyCar tires in 1994, compete full time in 1995.

1994 - Did extensive testing for Firestone with Patrick Racing in preparation for Firestone's return to IndyCar Racing in 1995. Won the Trans-Am championship to American Equipment Racing. Won the 24 Hours of Daytona. Did not compete in any IndyCar event.

1995 - Led Firestone brigade in Patrick Racing entry to its inaugural PPG Cup win at Michigan after the tire-maker returned to IndyCar racing for first time since 1974...MIS victory was the first of his career and came in the second-closest Indy Car race since 1930...Finished seventh in PPG Cup points...Had a total of four podium finishes with second at Long Beach and thirds at Australia and Detroit...Also finished fourth at Miami, fifth at Laguna Seca...Earned 10 top-10 placings.

1996 - Returned with the same Patrick Racing Firestone Lola Ford package that carried him to his first career victory in dramatic fashion at last season's Marlboro 500...Earned 9 top-10 placings.

1997 - Drove once again for Patrick Racing...Received his second career victory when he won the Australia race...Earned 11 top-10 placings...Got married to Judy.

1998 - Continued to drive for Patrick Racing...Earned 11 top-10 placings.

1999 - Signed on with Arciero-Wells Racing and drove along side teammate Cristiano da Matta. Piloted the Toyota powered #24 Pioneer/MCI Worldcom car to 6 top-10 placings.

2000 - Left CART racing to join Nascar. Signed on with Patrick Racing's Nascar team and drove the Ford powered, Tide sponsored #32 car.
