The Following Questions and Answers are taken from the Revenue Canada E-File Brochure
EFILE, or electronic filing, is an alternate way to file your income tax return. EFILE give you the option of having your tax information sent to Revenue Canada, by computer.
Do many people choose EFILE?
In 1995, 3.9 million people chose to send their income tax returns using EFILE because it is a paperless, accurate, and fast way of filing income tax returns.
Electronic filing means there is no paper return. This reduces the business costs of both electronic filers and the Department. It is also the environmentally friendly option.
Before accepting a return for processing, it is checked and reviewed for accuracy.
Although Revenue Canada processes the majority of electronically filed returns faster than paper returns, they review both types the same way, and this can add to the time it takes. However, EFILE eliminates several manual steps, and Revenue Canada can process most electronically filed returns in about two weeks.
Before and After Assessment Review
Revenue Canada conducts a more thorough review of some returns before and after assessments are issued. All returns are subject to these reviews, and they use the same criteria for choosing both electronically filed and paper filed returns.
Where can you electronically file your return?
You can file your return at the office of any approved electronic filer. They identify themselves by displaying the EFILE symbol. More than 9,000 electronic filers offered the EFILE service in 1995, including tax preparers, accountants, employers, and volunteers. Revenue Canada approves their application to provide the service, but does not set the fee the electronic filers charge.
Can you use EFILE from your home?
EFILE is not yet available for home use. If you prepare your own tax return, bring your papers and documentation with you to the electronic filer you choose. To safeguard the integrity of the EFILE system
Do you still sign a tax return?
Since there is no paper income tax return to sign when you use EFILE, You have to sign a Form T183, Information Return for Electronic Filing, stating that the information is correct. Both you and the electronic filer keep a copy of the form.
For an even faster refund...
Why not have your income tax refund, your GST credit, and your Child Tax Benefit payments deposited directly into an account at a financial institution? Ask your electronic filer about direct deposit.
