Greg Vincent's Hiking Site
County Kerry, Ireland 2011

 JULY 06 to July 20, 2012

SHAKESPEARE'S ENGLAND

Birthplace of William Shakespeare and home to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre Company, Stratford-upon-Avon lies on the northern perimeter of the Cotswolds, a landscape of green hills, honey coloured thatched cottages, stately homes and old public houses that is quintessentially English.

The area is steeped in history dating back to the Iron Age. To the west of the region is the ancient University town of Oxford while to the east Bath, home of Jane Austen, boasts the finest examples of Regency terrace architecture and functioning Roman bath-houses in the country. In the centre of the Cotswold Hills is Cirencester second only to London during the Roman occupation of Britain. While the holiday focuses on hiking the best looped sections of the 100 mile Cotstwold Way, optional guided tours of all these cities and attendance at a performance of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre Company are included. This is the 10th hiking holiday to the Great Britain and Ireland led by Greg Vincent and as in all previous trips it will be handled by Dave Southall.

HISTORY OF THIS TOUR SERIES

For the past few years, we have walked across England and Scotland, hiked portions of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path and the Preseli Hills in western Wales. We’ve also crossed the sea to explore County Donegal in Northern Ireland and County Clare in the Republic of Ireland.

In 2010 we went to to London, England for a "look about" and then north to Newcastle-Upon-Tyne where we walked portions of Hadrian’s Wall Path (an 84 mile National Trail) in a westward direction and examined the strong Roman influence. And in 2011 we visited County Kerry, Republic of Ireland where we hiked and examined its history.

In 2012 the "Discover the British Isles" series continues with a visit to the Cotswolds of England where we will hike and examine the history.

WHAT ARE "THE COTSWOLDS"?

The Cotswolds are a range of hills in west-central England and are designated as the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

The Cotswold Way is a long-distance footpath, approximately 166 km (103 miles) long, running the length of the AONB mainly on the edge of the Cotswold escarpment with views over the Severn Valley and the Vale of Evesham.

It is not our goal to walk the whole Cotswold Way. We will walk some parts of it as well as some other loop walks that may incorporate parts of the Cotswold Way.

>>> Map of the Cotswolds and the Cotswold Way <<<

The name Cotswold is often attributed to "Cots" meaning stone sheep shelters and "Wold" meaning rolling hills. The spine of the Cotswolds runs south west to north east through six counties, particularly Gloucestershire, west Oxfordshire, and south western Warwickshire. The northern and western edges of the Cotswolds are marked by steep escarpments down to the Severn valley and the Warwickshire Avon. This escarpment or scarp feature, sometimes called the Cotswold Edge, is a result of the uplifting (tilting) of the limestone layer, exposing its broken edge. The area is characterized by attractive small towns and villages built from the Cotswold stone (a yellow limestone). In the Middle Ages the wool trade made the Cotswolds prosperous resulting in the building of "wool churches".

Your Canadian Guide Your Guide from Canada

Greg Vincent has led nine trips to England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland handled by Dave Southall. Greg has led hikes for the past thirty years in Canada, the United States, the Caribbean  and Europe. Although the walking part of the outings is important to Greg, he is very much interested in the human history, geology, flora and fauna of the areas he walks. When the day is done and the day's walk is discussed the whole experience of the walk is what keeps him wanting more. Greg's training as an Air Force navigator and Army artillery officer helps getting the group to the destination!
