The following Hostas have been selected as "HOSTA OF THE YEAR" by the American Hosta Growers. To receive this honor the plant must be readily available in the nursery trade for retail distribution and meet the criteria for pricing. 1996 Hosta 'So Sweet' (Paul Aden) 14" tall x 22" wide. Leaves are a glossy light green with a medium to wide white leaf margin. Very fragrant white flowers through August. This hosta likes up to 3/4 sun. One of my favorites located in the Spicebush Garden. 1997 Hosta 'Patriot' (John Machen 1991) 24" tall x 36" wide. Bold white margins 1/2" to 1" wide, with dark green contrasting leaves. Margin color turns from creamy yellow in May and early June to white during the growing season. Medium lavender flowers in July on 30" scapes. Sport of Hosta 'Francee'. A very bright face in the Angel Garden. 1998 Hosta 'Fragrant Bouquet' (Paul Aden 1982) 18" tall x 30" wide. Light green leaves with a yellowish-white margin, wavy and undulate. Large funnel shaped white fertile fragrant flowers in mid-summer. This plant is a cross between Hosta 'Fascination' x Hosta 'Summer Fragrance'. A worthy addition to any garden and performs well in morning sun location in the Easter Island Bed. 1999 Hosta 'Paul's Glory' (Hofer/Ruh 1987) 18" tall x 40" wide. Yellow leaves with a blue-green margin, cordate and rugose. Centers of the leaves are chartreuse colored in late May, then slowly change to a bright gold by mid-July. Medium, fertile. white bell shaped flowers on 24" scapes. This hosta is a mutation of Hosta 'Perry's True Blue'. Angel Garden. 2000 Hosta 'June' (Neo Plants/England 1991) 16" tall x 32" wide. Beautiful gold centers, blue green margin up to 3/4" wide. Thick substance. At times there is streaking of the margin into the leaf center. Pale lavender 2" flowers late July. This plant is a gold centered sport of (Hosta 'Halcyon' (TF 1 x 7) Rated 2 on Zilis Blue Scale.) This plant receives plenty of attention early in our Angel Garden. 2001 Hosta 'Sagae' (Kenji Watanabe/Gotemba Nursery/Japan 1996) (Sagae Giboshi) 30" tall x 60" wide. Semi- upright plant. Thick texture, chalky blue green leaves with a neat gold margin. Leaves are 14" long and 10" wide, thick and curved. 3" violet flowers. This plant was formerly known as Hosta "Fluctuans Variegata' (A.H.S. 1987). This plant stands tall and distinguished in the Angel Garden. 2002 Hosta 'Guacamole' ( Bob Solberg 1994) 24" tall x 48" wide. Large mound of chartreuse foliage with a dark green margin Center brightens to gold if given enough sun into the season. Flowers are off white 3" long and fragrant. This plant does it all!!! Fast growth rate, good substance, fragrant flowers, excellent container plant.. Sport of Hosta 'Fragant Boquet' It has also sported the plants Hosta 'Fried Green Tomatoes' & 'Fried Bananas' Located in the Spicebush Garden. 2003 Hosta 'Regal Splendor' ( Walters Gardens 1987) 30" tall x 60" wide. Large vase shaped mound of creamy 3/4" margined blue-green foliage. Thick substance and like it's parent Hosta 'Krossa Regal' it makes a spectacular vase shaped mound. Located in the Angel Garden. 2004 Hosta 'Sum and Substance' (Paul Aden 1980) 60" wide x 30" tall will grow much larger in certain areas. Very glossy textured leaves that grows in an upright form. Chartreuse changes to gold with more sunlight. Very pest resistant plant, White bell shaped flowers in late summer, with 48" scapes. This plant prefers up to 3/4 off the day in the sun and is advertised as the haaving largest growth habit of all hostas.
