Indeed, as soon as one scientist tells us about the dire consequences, big business or government will have one of their high paid scientists refute the claim. Just this past week, the American Society of Scientists made the announcement that in fact, the average temperature over the oceans was a full degree higher than ever before, and the average temperature over land more than a degree higher as well. But, like acid rain, unless the results are immediate, and able to knock us on our heads hard enough to do damage, some of us disbelieve. This is fortunate for big business and governments. But for survival the light must come on - and stay on, so lets look at some of the items that add up to global warming. The earth is made up of oceans and an envelope of air, with of course, our land masses. We all learned of convection currents and the like in school. Look at the earth, and how the convection currents react globally, both air - and water. They are in constant movement. El Nino is a prime example, and is logistically supposed to happen every 11 years. But we will likely see more similar occurrences as time goes by. The rather nostalgic outlook of global warming COULD BE - BUT NOT NECESSARILY warmer climes for us here in Canada - where we are used to relatively short seasons, and cool climate. Some jokingly may say - "bring it on". But with global warming, you also have more severe and consequential climactic events - which will cost big bucks - and LIVES. It is important to understand these extreme climactic events, and consequences; we're going to see more and more of them. Hurricanes, tornadoes, brush fires, severe ice storms, drought - and yes, periodically, incredibly harsh cold winters. This is due to the convective currents trying to even out the earth's temperature. All of these events are the unleashing of energy - much of this energy is the added energy from the sun, being cooped-up by the green house gasses (sounding familiar yet). When I was young, and in public school we were taught about conservation - the need to conserve, and use wisely for future generations. These included NON-RENEWABLE natural resources such as oil, coal, and natural gas. This aspect is still true today - but the difference is that I'm very much aware that there is adequately enough of these fossil fuels to totally eliminate most of the life here on earth. The need for conservation now must focus on not only future needs of these resources - but on SURVIVAL of future generations. Technologies for other sources of power must be nurtured, such as hydrogen, which results in the effluent of water. The problem is that big business and governments may not be able to make as much money throughout their products and tax structures if we were burning water instead of gasoline etc. But we must look at the human deaths and the costs of these major climactic events happening all over the world. These tragedies and costs must be equated and related to the cost of NOT DEVELOPING the alternative power sources. Here in this part of Ontario, we all had a sigh of relief because a
major and catastrophic ice storm (just barely) missed us; but our turn
is coming, count on it!
Government & big business will say that there will be loss of jobs etc. etc. etc., and the economy will suffer if we employ environmentally correct industrial processes! Don't believe it - done properly, any jobs lost in the business sector could easily be taken-up in the new way of doing their business - in environmentally friendly posture. In most cases, to use more environmentally appropriate attitude/techniques - will cost less - than by doing business as we are now, and the end results will be paramount later on, for future generations. If we don't stop our current environmentally inconsiderate practices, on large industrial scale, future generations will pay sadly, and dearly. Indeed, future generations will want to 'hunt-out' , then dig up the bones of our (yours & mine - people of the 'right now' generation) generation - and urinate all over our bones! And guess what - unless we change our attitudes - we'll deserve it! |
