The Sound of Silence

The din of silence deafens me
I need to hear a loving word
I need to hear a baby laugh
And all the other sounds I've heard

For me to be cut off from sound
Would seem to me a living death
Would smother me like strangling hands
Would make me weak and gasp for breath

The wailing winter wind that howls
The music of the birds in spring
The gurgling splash of rippling stream
The rustling leaves, the raindrop's ping
Are such a very special part
Of glorious sounds that fill my life
The soothing roll of restless waves
Can calm and wash away my strife

I pray...don't take away these sounds
That are a vital part of me
For silence is like loss of sight
I need to hear the sounds to see.
