A STRANGE THING HAPPENED ON MY WAY TO LEAVING YOU
A strange thing happened, darling, on my way to leaving you.
I thought my love for you had died...I'd find somebody new.
But suddenly I realized that nothing else compared
With what we've had, the joys we'd known, the years that we had shared.
What was the fog that blinded me? That clouded up my head?
What evil curse betrayed my thoughts, consuming me with dread?
Was it the fear of growing old? That life was passing by?
That I must grope once more for youth before my turn to die?
I can't explain the urgency that ruled me for awhile,
Nor understand my lack to see the tears behind your smile;
For you knew all along that I was troubled in my mind
Yet never once your prayers for me were anything but kind.
If you can give me one more chance, I'll make it up to you.
If you can but forgive me, dear, I swear I will be true.
I'll try to love away the hurt I've caused by my mistake.
I'll hold you close and comfort you...I'll be here when you wake.
A strange thing happened, darling, on my way to leaving you.
Instead of having nothing left, my love was born anew
And someday, maybe I'll look back to how it might have been,
But I will know there's no one else I'd want to be my queen.
