DEVELOPING SOCIAL SKILLS IN ADOLESCENTS & YOUNG ADULTS WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS

The focus of this workshop will be on the social needs and complexities of adolescents and young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Topics that will be covered include teaching young people the tools required to be able to cope effectively with social situations, various relaxation techniques, problem solving, self-monitoring, and issues around sexuality and dating.

MAKING INFORMED DECISIONS THROUGH DATA COLLECTION

Is John’s medication helping? Is our behaviour protocol successful with Phil? Are Mary’s skills deteriorating over time? The value of taking good data and making use of the data can get you through some tough decisions. Making a data collection system should net you useful information relevant to the goals that you are trying to achieve. Keeping good data means that we are accountable to our funders, our agency, and most importantly to the people we support. This presentation will look at how to collect data, interpret data; and finding easier ways to collect data that work for YOU. Data is your friend!

AGING & INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES: Are You Up for the Challenge?

This workshop will discuss the implications of the aging process in people with intellectual disabilities. There will be considerable discussion concerning how to support aging individuals with intellectual disabilities and medical challenges. Specific reference to individuals with Spina Bifida, Cerebral Palsy, and Epilepsy will be made as well as lengthy discussion around challenges of aging for women with intellectual disabilities

AGGRESSION & VIOLENCE : Key Treatment & Support Strategies

This session will speak to the many facets of aggression and violence in persons with intellectual disabilities. The session will discuss causes of aggression including neurological, physiological, social/environmental, and psychiatric roots. Dr. Carey will talk about why we need to deal with aggressive and violent behaviours, and how we can treat these behaviours using various methodologies. Feel free to bring forward individual cases around aggressive and violent behaviours for discussion with Dr. Carey and other participants.

ANXIETY DISORDERS IN PEOPLE WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES

Many behavioural problems are caused by anxiety. This workshop will discuss anxiety and how it can impact individuals with an intellectual disability and their support systems. Situational anxiety as well as anxiety disorders will be covered, in addition to practical tips to reduce and manage anxiety.

FETAL ALCOHOL SYNDROME & FETAL ALCOHOL EFFECTS

This session will expand your breadth of knowledge and help you better understand the basics of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) and Fetal Alcohol Effects (FAE). Topics discussed will include cognitive implications, physical and behavioural characteristics, how to support individuals, how to support the family and much more. Feel free to bring forward non-identifying cases around FAS or FAE for discussion with Dr Baker.

DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILTIES & THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM

This workshop will highlight the work of the Justice Dual Diagnosis Case Management Team working with Regional Support Associates. Their mandate is to support special needs offenders in navigating through the criminal justice system. Discussion around these services includes courts support, diversion orders, intervention when dealing with the legal system and facilitating appropriate clinical supports.

COUPLE THERAPY & SUPPORT: A Positive Model for People with Intellectual Disabilities

Teenagers and adults with intellectual disabilities often want to live together, or dream about marriage and having children. This session (aimed towards parents and professionals) looks at issues related to couples, counseling, dealing with extended family, and key ethical issues. Relevant history and research on this topic will be discussed, along with ways of determining a couple’s prognosis to benefit from counseling. Attention will focus on the “Support-Centred Couple Intervention” model.

UNDERSTANDING COMMON SYNDROMES

This workshop will examine some common syndromes found in the intellectually disabled population. Syndrome-driven behaviours will be examined, along with effective treatment support strategies. Syndromes to be discussed will include: Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Prader-Willi Syndrome, Angelman’s Syndrome, along with Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome.
