To get to La Roqueta Island can be made from a few different areas on the beach, and you might be approached by someone with a small boat. But the main area is from Playa Caleta and Playa Caletilla, (Muelle, Caleta).

Playa Caleta and Playa Caletilla are two small beaches, located away from most of the tourist traffic in Old Acapulco. In between the two beach areas is a walkway to is Mágico Mundo Marino, a great aquarium that is fun for everyone. In any case as you walk up to the aquarium you will find small boats, some who are glass bottom boats. They of course have the added advantage that on the way to the island you can see some of the ocean life. A couple of the times we had one of the local boys dive over board and bring up some Sea urchins.

Just ten minutes by boat direct, at a cost of about $3.00 US, gets you away from the big city, to a nice sandy beach looking back at the skyline of Acapulco. Boats run every 30 minutes with the last boat back is at 5:30 p.m. It is tranquility at its best and don't miss the beer drinking burrows, who may indulge in some raucous acts. Take your camera, suntan, bathing suits as it is a great place to swim. Now if you are into snorkeling, bring your gear or rent it there as this one of the best places to snorkel.

The tour guides at the Acapulco Bay may not tell you this but Isla la Roqueta is the place were almost all the snorkel and scuba diving tours take you. I bring my own scuba gear from home as it has corrective lenses. Well the snorkeling off the shore was to only a lot of fun and there was coral and a variety of colorful fish. The shoreline itself was very active with many luxury and tourist boats coming in and out all day.

The visibility for scuba diving and snorkeling is great around the island. I remember the first time I went diving with Leo a dive master he told me to jump of the boat and I told him we couldn't as we would hit the rocks. He stated to laugh and told me the rocks were at least 30 feet under the water. The fish were very varied. Our first dive was to 35 ft, and we saw sea snakes, octopus, and other fish.

The one year we did take a tour to the island that included a Mayan Show as well as lunch at the restaurant. Now our lunch was not bad and even tough we were told that it was open bar it only included beer. I will know to ask more questions next time I take a guided tour. But it was nothing like the garlic baked red snapper we had the one year on the beach. Just be careful to agree on a price if you are getting your snack our Red Snapper on the beach, whish is available and some of the freshest and most tasteful.

The one thing to keep in mind is avoid weekends and holidays as this were the Mexican spend their weekends. After all Playa Caleta and Playa Caletilla is Old Acapulco and on the weekends is were you will find Mexicans families.
