Deep sea fishing in 2003...

This is the second time out deep sea fishing for me, the first one was about 15 years ago. I can't remember much about the first time other than I was the only one that got a marlin or swordfish. I do remember wondering about why they called it deep sea fishing when the beat floats on top of the water.

That is until the marlin took the beat and took of with my line deeper and deeper. I was starting to wonder if I was going to run out of line. Than a half hour or so later I finally got the fish in the boat.

Well in 2003 we got up early and got ready to go deep sea fishing again. In most cases they want anywhere from $50.00 to $250.00 US dollars per person and at that price I'm not that much of a fishing fan. However we happen to meet a fellow by the name of Popeye (nickname) and we were told that we could go for $150.00 for all of us, not per person.

So arrangements go made for our adventure. I was here with my wife Jane and her sister Alice. But Jane does not want to go as she gets sick as soon as she sees a boat. So who would go? Well we had made friends with Dave and Donna from Toronto and another Dave. So it would be the 5 of us for $150.00 that is only $30.00 each, that I could handle.

We took off about 6 am and got to the boat a few minutes later and after loading up and getting ready we were off. And what a glorious day, but then in Acapulco they are always wonderful. After all there one thing you can count on in Acapulco is the weather as the average rain days is one day for the whole month of January. And after 20 years we had rain ones.

Now I don't know about you but I don't get up that early on a regular basis. At home I'm up by about 7:00- 7:30, but in most cases not until 8:00 as I very seldom go to bed before 12:00 midnight. So on vacation I would hardly ever get up before 8:00, but this morning I had to get up before breakfast.

Well like I said it was a most beautiful day as the sun was rising and I was able to get some great sunrise photographs. I'm not sure if I like the sunrise as much as a sunset, but one this for sure you don't have to get up with the birds. According to my file name it was 7:02 when I took my first set of pictures.

Well both the Dave's got seasick and even Alice got a little wheezy. I on the other hand got into the Cerveza's and that kept my head and my stomach from feeling woozy.

Oh yes, lets get back to the fishing and let me tell you about the one that got away, just kidding. As it turned out only Alice and myself got a fish, I believe they call that a MAHI-MAHI, also known in Mexico as "Dorado". The Dorado is one of the most beautiful game fish in the sea. The photograph does not really show the beauty of this colorful fish. Even as we were pulling in the fish it reflected the rainbow greens in many different shades. I don't know how heavy the fish was but at about 4-5 feet in length it was too heavy for me to hold it up by the line by myself without gloves.

I think that the Dave's were to seasick to catch anything and of course after a while the fish just stop biting or at least that's what the captain will tell you. But I'm a ones-in-five-year fishing kind of a guy, so I catch my fish and then enjoy the ride. So, lets see $150.00, two fish, well that's only $75.00 a fish, not bad for a day out. After the photograph was taken, we returned back to our hotel and a few cool ones. Later that night Popeye returned and brought us a taste of the fish and all I can say it was as tasty as it looked.

But you know it is so relaxing, one must go at least ones every five years. But since I'm going back to Acapulco this January 2006 or three years later I might see if my old friend Popeye is still there and arrange a fishing trip. If not, I'll just go to Puerto Marques to Pepee's restaurant and catch a fish and papa's (French fries) there.

Going to Acapulco I enjoyed the opportunity to photograph anything from a sunrise to the villas and older houses in the old Acapulco area. I have posted a few of my favorites here. Well I hope you enjoyed my fishing day in Acapulco and will also enjoy the day in pictures.

In 2006 we were back in Acapulco and once again I went fishing, but this time I had a totally new experience as I went fishing with the local fishermen and not the fishing charters. For more information on my 2006 trip to Acapulco and the many new friends we made, have a look at Acapulco 2006 Vacation.

Also if you like fish, then you have to try Tito's restaurant called the “Fausto Mondragon Rosas”. Of all our fish dinners that was the very best!

Cheers
