Scan #13012 - From the text of the letter it was sent from Lorette, Quebec [ a small village outside of Quebec, on Oct. 15 1824 - did not have a post office at this time ] - received a Quebec backstamp " 16 24 " [ the 4 is inverted ] and was sent on to LaPrarie on the south shore below Montreal - The franking of "9" [ red - paid ] designates the 9 pence rate for the distance from Quebec to Montreal [ 100 - 200 miles ] - The franking of "1" below the "9" is what makes this a very unusual item - the "1" [ red - paid ] designates the 1 pence rate for the private courier who would take the letter to the south shore village of LaPrarie - thus the total franking is "10" pence - Price: - $195.00 Cdn.
